Starting a new life in Australia is a huge step, and the NDIS can feel like one more confusing system on top of everything else. If you or a family member lives with disability, here is a clear and reassuring guide to getting the support you are entitled to.
The NDIS is support, not welfare
The NDIS is not a handout, and it is not charity. It is a national scheme that funds support for people with permanent and significant disability so they can live more independently. Importantly, applying for the NDIS has no impact on your visa outcome. Seeking support is your right.
Who can apply
Eligibility depends partly on your visa and residency. People on permanent humanitarian visas can generally access the NDIS, while some temporary visas do not qualify. You also need to be under 65 when you apply and have a disability that is permanent and significantly affects daily life. If you are unsure where you stand, ask. It is worth checking properly.
The steps, made simple
The process becomes far less daunting when you break it down: gather evidence about the disability and its impact, make an access request to the NDIA, attend a planning meeting, and then receive a plan built around your goals. Free interpreting through TIS National is available for every step, so language is never the thing that holds you back.
You do not have to do it alone
Our settlement and NDIS teams help newly arrived families understand the system, prepare documents, and attend meetings with confidence, all in a culturally safe way. Reach out and we will guide you from the very first question.
