Australia is one of the most multicultural countries in the world, yet families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are still under-represented in the NDIS. If that includes your family, here is what you need to know, and what you have every right to expect.
Why the gap exists
People from multicultural backgrounds make up a large share of the population, but a much smaller share of NDIS participants. The reasons are familiar to many families: language barriers, a lack of trusted information, fear of the system, and support that does not reflect their culture or faith. None of this means the support is not for you. It means the path to it has not always been built with you in mind.
What culturally safe support looks like
Culturally safe support starts by treating your identity as a strength, not a complication. In practice, that looks like a few clear things.
- Workers who speak your language or interpreters who do.
- Respect for prayer, dietary needs and religious observance.
- Sensitivity to family roles and how decisions are made at home.
- The option to choose workers based on gender and cultural fit.
- Information explained clearly, without jargon or assumptions.
Your rights as a participant
You have the right to free interpreting in your dealings with the NDIA, to ask for documents in your language, and to choose a provider that fits your family. Seeking support has no effect on your visa or residency. Asking for help is your right, not a risk.
Building trust, one family at a time
Trust is earned through understanding. Our team reflects the multicultural fabric of Western Sydney, including Muslim and multilingual families, and many of us have lived the journey ourselves. If you want support that truly understands where you come from, we are here for that conversation.
